The history of Washington’s football team can probably be best described as a success sandwich with a filling of failure in the middle. From 1936 to 1945, the Skins posted ten winning seasons in a row, and went to six NFL Championship Games, winning two, both against the Chicago Bears. What followed was an incredible drought of a quarter of a century without a post-season. Only four winning seasons were registered during those 25 years.
An upturn in fortunes marked the beginning of the 1970s, reaching the playoffs five years out of six under head coach George Allen, and making it to their first Super Bowl, a 14-7 loss to Miami in January 1973. Then: the most successful period in their history. In the ten years between 1982 and 1991, Joe Gibbs led Washington to four Super Bowls, winning three.
