Founded in 1993, the Panthers played their first season in the NFL two years later, finishing 7-9, the best first-year performance ever registered by an expansion team. They would go one better the following season, ending with a 12-4 record and beating the defending Super Bowl champions the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs. The first time Carolina would itself reach the Super Bowl was in the 2003 season, narrowly losing to the Patriots 32-29 in what was at the time the most-watched Super Bowl ever. The Panthers would return to football’s biggest stage at the end of an extremely impressive 2015 season, as MVP Cam Newton guided the team to a 15-1 regular season record. Although the Panthers went into Super Bowl 50 as the favourites, they would again fall short, this time to the Broncos in what would be Peyton Manning’s final game.
