Peterborough United were elected to the Football League in 1960, and immediately won the Fourth Division at the first time of asking. Since their inception over half a century ago, Peterborough have never fallen out of the top four divisions. Their most successful season was the 1991/92 campaign, when, after knocking Wimbledon, Newcastle and Liverpool out of the League Cup, Posh secured promotion to the second tier for the first time ever after a dramatic, memorable playoff run, beating Stockport in the final. The following year, they would finish 10th, their highest ever league placing. In 2014, Peterborough won the Football League trophy at Wembley courtesy of a 3-1 win over Chesterfield.
