Without question, the greatest day in the history of Blackpool football club was the 1953 F.A. Cup final. Having already reached two finals in the five years previous, and lost both, Blackpool overcame the Nat Lofthouse-led Bolton Wanderers 4-3 in one of the most famous, entertaining cup finals of all-time. Despite Stan Mortensen’s hat-trick, the game is now widely known as the “Matthews Final” on account of the fine performance Stanley Matthews gave on the wing. Later that year, four of the Blackpool team would start for England together in a match against Hungary. In 2010, Blackpool became the first team to win promotion via the playoffs in every division, as Ian Holloway’s men defeated Cardiff City in the final to reach the Premier League for the first time in 29 years.
